Top Russian-Armenian Director and Cinematographer Makes Waves With New Projects

Tigran Mutafyan, an award-winning Russian-Armenian director of photography, has lined up several new rapidly growing projects.

The international deals are a coup for the successful director of photography, setting up further expectations of accolades and success.

Mutafyan brings a pedigree of award-winning, artfully constructed films, television programs and even commercials. His previous works include popular and award-winning Russian documentaries such as “Demiurg,” “On The Roof of Saint Petersburg,” “The Adventure Failed Thanks For Trying” and “The Mission,” which focuses on famed theatre instructor Veniamin Filshtinsky. Currently in the works is a collaboration with trail blazing Iranian-American film maker, Saeed Khoze on a film called “69 Palm,” set to film in 2015.

Khoze’s previous critically acclaimed work includes award-winning titles such as “Virginity” and “Forgotten Hurricane.” His most recent film, “Damn Foreigners,” won the Rising Star Award at the Canada International Film Festival with nominations at the Boston International Film Festival and the Long Island Film Festival. Khoze’s films have also won over 30 awards, including the Long Island Film Festival, the Tehran International Film Festival and the Valley Film Festival.

Working with a decorated director gives Mutafyan the opportunity to exercise his creativity. In a rare creative collaboration, he has Khoze’s trust to compose the shots of “69 Palm” however he pleases.

“I feel the creative force 100%,” says Mutafyan of the working relationship. “No studio will give you that chance, only a director that believes in what you are doing.”

The two met in a serendipitous meeting arranged by a friend at a film festival. Upon seeing his demo reel, Khoze was impressed by his abilities, which were sharpened at the Saint Petersburg State Theatre Arts Academy.

“I truly believe Tigran is a true artist,” says Khoze. “He has a unique eye. He is absolutely different compared to other directors of photography that I have ever worked with.”

In addition to this successfully landed gig, Mutafyan also looks forward to the release of his work on a major Russian film with director Dmitri Averin and other high profile stars of the Russian entertainment industry. The film, titled “The Cage for the Rabbit” is set for release in 2016 and tells the story of a man who learns government secrets by reading through his fingers.

Averin, a former student of Mutafyan’s in Saint Petersburg, was happy to work with his mentor on his first successful feature film. “Tigran directed and mentored me, A-Z,” says Averin. “All visual story telling, the rhythm of the characters, movement, transitions, and many other visual aspects of the movie.”

It’s clear that Mutafyan’s influence spreads far and wide, whether they are peers, employers or students.
